MOSFA was founded at Elmina, Ghana in 2016 to enable African journalists to coordinate their voices to influence governments and stakeholders and to champion the campaign for better fisheries management. To spark public accountability through the media, the World Bank Group and partners mobilized over 100 African journalists from print, online, radio, TV and cartoonists, from 44 countries within the five regions of Africa to get their support in filling a void in governance and information. The purpose was to:

  • create greater public awareness about fisheries‘ management in West Africa;

  • encourage member journalists to join a support network of professional partnerships, experts and champions to lead the African campaign against illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU) in Africa;

  • collaborate with other journalists to coordinate a voice to influence fishery policy processes in Africa;

  • encourage member journalists to work with governments to build practical and effective cooperation tools, mechanisms and processes to curb IUU fishing in Africa; and

  • enhance accountability and transparency from government officials and fight corruption.
